(Download Complete Schedule Here - updated March 20, 2013)
1) Protect your Hearing: (Led by Mathew Croft) Our ears are one of the most valuable resources for our lives as musicians. Based on recent research, Mathew delves into what our ears do with sound and how we can protect them from damage.
2) Improvisation: (Led by Leslie Hart) This interactive clinic will provide ideas for developing improvisation skills within the context of the folksong "Long, Long Ago." By incorporating priorities found in Developing Musicianship Through Improvisation (Azzara & Grunow, 2006, 2010) participants will: sing/play the melody by ear, sing/play roots of the harmonic progression, sing/play common tendency tones, and sing/play rhythmic and expressive “solos” to the harmonic progression.
3) Air & Tone Production: (Led by Daniel Wood) This workshop will talk about effective breathing and tone production to help you maximize your potential and sound on the horn.
4) Out in Music World: Auditions and Music School: (Led by Anthony Delivanis) A former Mtn. View high school student, Anthony will discuss his approach to auditions and what it is like to major in music. This workshop is ideal for the middle school, high school or college students who want to either pursue music as a career or keep it in their lives after they graduate.
5) Expanding One's Range: (Led by Scott Hartman) In this session, you will learn the fundamentals for playing high and low on the horn. You will guided through all the aspects at play when you perform from the middle to the extremes of your range.
6) Dynamics/Articulation (Led by Scott Hartman) To be an excellent player, you need to be able to take full advantage of your instrument's dynamic range and articulation palette. Learn how to achieve great staccato, accents, legato along with strong fortes and delicate pianos.
7) Performance Anxiety: (Led by Mathew Croft) Nervousness can wreck havoc on a performance and prevent us from doing our best. This workshop deals with strategies to deal with the stress and anxiety that can result from playing our instruments.
8) Extended Techniques: (Led by Daniel Wood) This workshop talks about all the sounds that can be created using our horn that are rarely used, but are often quite effective. It includes stopped horn, mutes, vocalisations, trills, half-valve effects, glissandi, percussive effects, electronic looping gear and more.
In addition to the above topics, information will be provided on horn repertoire and equipment.
IVASI (presented by Leslie Hart) is a way to play major orchestral works without an orchestra! IVASI uses techniques originating in the Hollywood studios. A conductor will synchronize his/her conducting talents with recordings of an agreed-upon work. The result, when shown on a video screen, makes available the possibility of learning the work without having to join an orchestra to do so. A projector is turned on and with state-of-the-art sound systems of today, the full sound of the orchestra is heard letting all the musicians in the ensemble play along, following the conductor on the screen. With the current technique using the DVD format, the process is even more exciting -- searching for rehearsal points to repeat difficult areas becomes a very easy process. All levels of players are welcome to try IVASI and DVD's are available for purchase.
